The off-season in Canberra is usually filled with all football leagues, netball, snow sports and deserted softball diamonds. However, this year we took advantage of the player interest, the willing volunteers and the fantastic facilities we have at Hawker International Softball Centre to run an 8 Week Winter Academy Program.
With over 70 athletes from both Southside and Northside Canberra regions ranging from 9 to 19 years coming along each week, the Winter Academy aimed to develop skills in a range of disciplines in particularly offense, defence and fitness and conditioning.
Each Sunday, a well-planned program was delivered by accredited coaches and their many assistants. Throughout the program athletes were able to focus on their pitching or catching, infield and outfield skills, the fundamentals of hitting with technical data captured along with video analysis, and other specialised fields such as umpire information sessions on basic rules and shoulder injury prevention with a qualified physiotherapist.
Softball ACT would like to thank our coaches for their planning, dedication and personal commitment to see the program from start to finish.
As we head into the 2017/18 Softball Season we look forward to seeing all our Winter Academy athletes out of the diamonds displaying their newly honed skills.
